Bambini palestinesi messi in pericolo dall’esercito

At-Tuwani – On the morning of Monday, October 21, the Israeli army escort that usually accompanies Palestinian children from the villages of Tuba and Maghayir Al-Abeed to their school in At-Tuwani failed to arrive. The children were left to walk the longer route, accompanied by two international volunteers, at high risk of being attacked by settlers from the illegal Havat Ma’on outpost and Ma’on settlement.

As with every school morning, the children arrived at the agreed meeting point (the chicken barns of Ma’on) at 7:26 am and waited for their military escort. International volunteers contacted DCL (the liaison responsible for coordinating the escort) twice to inform them of the absence of the escort and highlight the urgency of their arrival for the safety of the children, who were unprotected in a volatile area.

DCL was called at 7:38 am and again at 7:48 am. The second call was left unanswered, so the international volunteers contacted the nearest military base directly at 7:49 am. Volunteers called the base an additional three times, at 7:54 am, 8:03 am, and 8:08 am.

The army first responded by stating: “we will take care of it”, in the next call they responded that they were aware of the delay, and in the third call, they asked volunteers, agitatedly, to call back in five minutes. Finally, during the fourth call, the army stated that the escort was on its way.

Meanwhile, as the children waited for the escort to arrive, two settlers approached from inside the chicken barns and accused them of throwing stones at the farm. Settlers told to the children to leave “their land” immediately. At approximately 8.15 am, the children ran away toward Tuba, deciding it was too dangerous to wait longer for the escort. They subsequently walked the longer route to At-Tuwani, accompanied by two international volunteers. On the journey some settlers in Havat Ma’on began catcalling the children, making them fear for their safety.

The children arrived to school at around 9.00 am, one hour late and very shaken by the experience.
