Apparently it is a crime to plant a tree in the South Hebron Hills: an unwritten law, hidden in the code of the Israeli occupation and applying only to Palestinians. About one hudred people gathered yesterday in the village of At Tuwani to plant dozens of olive trees on Palestinian land. As families arrived and joined the nonviolent action the air was filled with the shouts and calls of children and the aroma of bread being prepared nearby by the women of the village. As the stones warmed in small fires and the bread began to rise, settlers from the Israeli settlement of Ma’on and the illegal outpost of Havat Ma’on appeared at the edge of the outpost, talking on phones, alerting the Israeli army, police and civil administration. As the bread began to bake, Israeli soldiers, border police, civil police, civil administration personnel and armed settlers appeared amongst the cherry trees of the outpost, ready to remove the Palestinians and the trees from their land. Today the village resisted, settling the new trees into the land, boiling kettles of tea, and coating fresh bread with fragrant zatar and olive oil. Families ate together while above them on the hill the jeeps of the Israeli military circled, and settlers watched the new trees, perhaps dreaming of how they will uproot them in the night. Today is the hebrew holiday of Tu Bishvat; the New Year of the Trees. In the South Hebron hills freedom to plant trees only exists for the Israelis.

Sembra che piantare ulivi sia reato nelle colline a Sud di Hebron. Una legge non scritta che vale solo per i palestinesi, inserita idealmente nel codice dell’Occupazione israeliana. Ieri a Tuwani si sono ritrovati circa cento palestinesi per mettere in dimora decine e decine di ulivi, su terreno palestinese. Tante famiglie per un’azione non violenta, molti bambini e donne intente a cuocere il pane su pietre. Situazione che ha portato i coloni israeliani di Ma’On e dell’avamposto di Havat Ma’On ad allertare esercito, polizia e Amministrazione israeliana. Così, poco dopo, dai filari dei ciliegi sono salite jeep di militari e della polizia, accompagnate da coloni armati, giunte sul posto per allontanare i palestinesi. Allontanarli dalla loro terra. Il villaggio ha deciso di resistere organizzando un pranzo a base di pane e zatar mentre il carosello di mezzi militari e di coloni sfiorava i nuovi ulivi, già presi di mira. Gli stessi coloni che si stanno preparando per il Tu BiShvat, ossia il Capodanno degli Alberi, che si festeggia proprio oggi. Nelle colline a Sud di Hebron la libertà di piantare alberi esiste solo per gli israeliani.
